Cancellation of AFYM Concert 15th March 2020
It is with great regret that the AFYM committee has made the decision to cancel the AFYM Gala concert, which was due to take place on Sunday 15th March.
We have reached this viewpoint after careful and detailed consideration of all the available advice. As the number of cases of coronavirus increases nationally, and more cases are diagnosed in South Wales, we believe that it would be irresponsible to bring people together in an enclosed environment.
Several of our committee members have health issues which place them in the at-risk group, as do some of our volunteer stewards, invited guests, sponsors and possibly family and friends of the performers.
Perhaps we are being over cautious, but we feel that it is better to err on the side of caution rather than to take possible risks. No one can predict the progress of the virus between now and 15th March, but if the number of cases increases rapidly, the national advice may be to avoid crowded or enclosed spaces. We feel that it is important to decide now, rather than at the very last moment.
Our apologies to all of you who have been looking forward to performing or attending as audience members. We know that you will be disappointed, but we feel that this is the right decision in very difficult circumstances.
All the performers have now been informed about the cancellation and efforts continue to contact invited concert guests.
The AFYM committee will consider whether it might be possible to organise another event for our young performers at some point in future but this will depend on how the situation with coronavirus develops.
We will contact trophy winners later and arrange for them to receive their trophies when it is possible to make suitable arrangements. Those who have applied for bursaries will also be informed about the outcome.
We have enquired about the position of those who have already purchased tickets for the concert from the Taliesin Box Office and have been informed that ticket costs will be refunded and that the Box Office will email all those concerned.
